Let's celebrate 50 Harvests
It was on a cold and windy night in 1468…
No, just joking it was not a dramatic day in the Medici period but indeed it was 500 years later in the 1960s that the Sieni family’s Montefioralle venture began.
This short dive into the Montefioralle history will have its logic because we will launch some fantastic news about our 50th anniversary today that we want to share with all of you.
A celebration we hope you all will want to be a part of with us!
A brief history
In 1964, Renato Sieni, the grandfather of Alessia and Lorenzo, the father of Fernando, decided to take over the running of the vineyards that belonged to the local parish of Montefioralle for many centuries.
Montefioralle is the old hamlet not far from Greve in Chianti that those of you who have visited our winery have seen in the background of our vineyards. The small medieval hamlet of Roman origin paints a picturesque picture in the already stunning landscape, don’t you think?
The castle of Montefioralle dates to 931 when a German monk passing by decided to stay and set up a fortified monastery here. During the middle ages, it then changed hands several times among the local noble families and was a strategic spot in the fights over territory and supremacy between Florence and Siena.
In the end, the castle would turn into the hands of the local parish and the vineyards would ultimately belong to the Sieni family, as mentioned above.
Let’s return to Montefioralle of today
Renato planted new vines together with his son Fernando, whom you all know, and they started to produce Chianti Classico wines. The first harvest of the Sieni family was in 1968. It was only in the 1990s that the Sieni’s could acquire the winery when the Church decided to sell off the vineyards.
So, come to celebrate with us...
